DOEACC Bio Informatics
Courses
Introduction:
Bioinformatics is the convergence of Information Technology & Life Sciences. Bioinformatics is a fast growing discipline & has emerged as a cutting edge technology of the knowledge revolution. Quality Human Resource Development in this area is therefore a challenging task.
Manpower Demand projections in
Bio-Informatics:
According to CII-MCIT Bio-Informatics HRD in India Report – 2005 “It is estimated that the demand of Bio-Informaticians will out strip supply by 1354 in 2010-11, 5108 professionals in 2011-12 & 10,998 in 2012-13, if the Indian Bio-Informatics industries continues to grow at a CAGR of 42% as predicted by the experts. Further, it is estimated that nearly 670 teachers would be required in the formal education sector in 2008-09. Assuming a very realistic target for all institutes by 2012-13, requirements for faculty would rise to 2723. The demand for Indian Bio-Informatics professionals from the rest of the world is expected to rise from 348 (in 2003-04) to a total of 8169 by 2012-13.”
According to Biospectrum, the Indian Biotech Sector is growing with a total revenue up by 37.4 % in 2005-06 and it is estimated that the Indian Biotech Sector will achieve $ 5 billion mark in revenue by 2010 with the growth driven by Bio-Pharmaceuticals, Bio-Services and Bioinformatics. Biotech work in India is leading towards discovery led Drug development becoming a reality. Therefore, a special stress is required on creation of quality massive human capital in Biotech Sector and greater Public Private Partnership support to ensure India’s entry in the elite Biotech Club.
To meet the growing demand for trained Bio-informatics professionals in India, DOEACC Society. (www.doeacc.edu.in) has already developed courses in Bio-informatics DOEACC has developed the complete range of training programmes in the area of Bioinformatics.
- ‘O’ Level - Diploma in Bioinformatics
- ‘A’ Level - Post Graduate Diploma in Bioinformatics
Benefits:
The prospective employers of these courses may be in Drugs, Pharmaceuticals, Bio-fertilizers, Agriculture & Energy Sector, Environmental Engineering industries, Research & educational organizations.
The Bio-informatics 'O' level (Diploma) professionals can look forward to become Assistant Programmers, Technical Assistants and Information Assistants. The Bio-informatics 'A' Level (Advance Diploma) professionals can look forward to become Programmers, Training faculty and Research Assistants.
Eligibility Criteria:
Any person with good IQ and logical ability is considered suitable for these courses. No minimum qualification is, therefore, prescribed for most of the courses. Masters Graduates, Ten-Plus-Twos, and even Matriculates are accepted. As graduation is generally the minimum qualification prescribed for the posts of computer professionals in private sector, it is recommended that the participants planning to join this profession should have a good bachelor's degree in any subject. Knowledge of mathematics is helpful in learning some language Courses and in courses in Computer Aided Design. As the graduates with Mathematics, Statistics, Science, Operation Research, Commerce and Economics are generally found to be more logical in their approach, they are preferred as computer professionals in some of the organisations. In public sector organisations, graduates are accepted at lower levels and masters' degree or an engineering degree is insisted for higher posts in the profession.

The experts of the
Syllabus Committee are drawn from leading institutions of the
country. O / A level has been launched on pilot basis
initially at its own DOEACC Centres at 12 locations since from
August, 2003 . So far 982 students have been registered across
09 DOEACC Centres at 12 locations. 88 students have qualified
at O level and 201students have qualified at A level so far.
With the efforts of the Placement Committee and initiatives of
DOEACC Centres, over 38 qualifiers have been placed in leading
institutions / industries. B level courses equivalent to M.Sc.
(Tech in Bio-informatics is being launched by DOEACC Centre,
Kolkata. DOEACC has signed an MoU with West Bengal University
of Technology (WBUT), Kolkata for recognition of DOEACC
B-Level programme to M.Sc. (Tech.) in Bioinformatics (after
undergoing an added 6 months dissertation / Project).DOEACC
Centre, Kolkata is the Nodal Co-ordinating Centre for this
activity (www.doeacckolkata.in )
